French for English Speakers (A1 to B1): speak, understand and do business in Francophone Africa

To learn French as an English speaker, start with pronunciation (nasal vowels, the French r, silent final letters) and the core structures: noun gender with le and la, the verbs être (to be) and avoir (to have), regular -er verbs in the present tense, and simple questions. Then learn vocabulary by topic (greetings, numbers and prices, daily life, work, travel) and use it straight away in real situations. Add the passé composé, the near future, object pronouns and polite forms to reach B1. Practise 20 minutes a day, especially speaking, for example with an AI assistant in voice mode that corrects your mistakes.

Benin, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroon, Guinea… Your neighbours speak French, and so do millions of customers, partners and employers across West and Central Africa. French also opens doors to universities, international organisations and jobs across the continent.

This course takes you from zero (or almost) to B1, the level where you can handle most everyday and work situations. Everything is explained in English, with examples from life and business in Francophone Africa.

You start with pronunciation (nasal sounds, the French r, silent letters) and the core structures: gender, articles, être and avoir, the present tense. You learn to introduce yourself, talk about your daily life, buy and bargain at the market, take a zémidjan or a taxi, and ask for directions. You then move to the past and the future, and to practical situations: phone calls, emails, the border and the hotel, the pharmacy, meetings and job interviews. Finally, you consolidate with pronouns, polite forms, comparisons and linking words, and leave with a method to keep improving on your own, including speaking practice with an AI assistant.

Included: a vocabulary notebook by topic, the 50 most useful verbs with their conjugations, and 100 ready-to-use phrases.

Questions fréquentes

I have never studied French. Is this course for me?

Yes. It starts with the alphabet and your first words, and everything is explained in English.

How long does it take to reach B1?

It depends on your starting point and how regularly you practise. With 20 to 30 minutes a day, most learners make clear progress within a few months; moving from one level to the next usually takes several dozen hours of practice.

Is this European French or African French?

You learn standard French, understood everywhere. The course also points out common words and expressions you will hear in Francophone Africa, so you are not surprised at the market or in a taxi.

Does it prepare for an official exam?

It gives you the foundations of level B1. For an official exam such as the DELF, you will then need specific practice on the exam format.
